Honey Fungus Near Fav Tree
After sustained raindkfall, we noticed dense, overlapping clusters of mushrooms emerging directly from underground tree roots of our favourite tree. This is not a good sign.
The honey-yellow and tawny-brown caps have flattened and some have started to split. I noticed a white spore deposit around these growth. I think they might be eating the roots of a tree we have in the garden out back.
When I was earning Botany Merit Badge, I remember the Camp Forager warning us that when mushroom caps start to split they can harbor maggots and mold. Eat them and expect to get food poisoning.
So I will be snapping photos of these things before scraping them away.
